Building strength, exercise and good habits are a go-to when it comes to helping patients manage pain. When your patient has a condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, however, the pain threshold might be high enough that it becomes a barrier to starting even the most rudimentary physical training. Today, let’s look at a few strategies to assist in addressing pain and function for your patient’s with rheumatoid arthritis

Thermal Modalities.

This is one of the more common non-drug treatments of RA pain, so chances are that you already use it some capacity. Heat can relieve muscle spasms, pain and in increased elasticity in muscles, tendon and cartilage. A paraffin bath is one way to apply pain-relieving heat, and new innovations like Parasilk allow easy, mess-free and economical application in both clinic and home.

ROM and Strengthening Exercises

Gentle ROM and strengthening exercises can reduce pain, increase of motion and improve functionality. Isometric contractions of 10-20 percent maximum tension held for 10 seconds can lead to improvement, if done on a daily basis. However, they should be utilized in non-inflamed joints, and your program should progress slowly in order to monitor for signs of inflammation.

Joint Protection

One way to get your patients ready for strengthening exercises is to implement joint protection strategies. An orthoses can reduce inflammation, prevent deformities and increase grip strength. One study found that patients reported reduced joint swelling and a better sense of well-being after using compression gloves. Gentle compression can contain joint swelling, which then decreases pain.
