Getting Ready for the Electronic Visit Verification Process

With the Baby Boomer generation aging, the number of Americans requiring care at home is only going to increase. Combine that with advances in technology, and it’s no wonder that CMS will soon mandate GPS tracking for home health visits. The Electronic Visit Verification process is an extension of the 21st Century Cures Act, and will go into effect within the next few years.

With the deadline fast approaching, is your home care business ready? VGM Advantage has a few tips on what you can do to prepare:

1)      Contract with a GPS company.

Luckily, there are already a plethora of companies on the market, like Actsoft, that provide the services you need to stay compliant with the Electronic Visit Verification process. This includes not only tracking your employees via GPS, but also allowing you to upload your company’s own documents to let patients sign off that everything was done as reported.

2)      Centralize your data.

Part of the Cures Act requires that providers keep a centralized list of their care givers, both current and past. Some of the information you want to include in your database are names, Social Security numbers, certification numbers, state licenses and provider identifiers. Part of this is to keep caregivers who lost their credentials from Medicaid in one state to go to another state and continue practicing.

You will also need to categorize your data so you can address anomalies. For example, is there a correlation between a caregiver arriving on time and the quality of patient care? The more you are able to document, the more you are able to defend yourself against accusations of fraud.

3)      Document your success.

CMS is moving to a results-oriented pay scale, and the Cures Act may continue that trend further. By closely recording how well your patients fare under your caregivers, you will set yourself up for success later on.

At VGM Advantage, we’re here to help small home care providers thrive in the way that only larger home care providers do. If you’re ready to take your business to the next level, don’t hesitate to reach out to us today!
